Class Descriptions

Session 1 (S1): INTRO TO NOSE WORK

In this first session of classes, we introduce you and your dog to the scenting game by using your dog’s choice of motivator- whether it’s high value treats or a high value toy. Your dog is taught to search boxes for his high value motivator. We then add some challenges and more fun to the game including adding a multitude of objects and varying heights. This series of classes are held indoors. This session of foundation classes is what we build on to hone your dog’s searching skills.

Sessions 2-4 (S2-4): NOSE WORK FOUNDATIONS

Throughout these next three sessions of classes, Sessions 2-4, we will resume your dog’s foundation work. We will focus on continuing to improve your dog’s searching skills by building on the foundations started in Intro to Nose Work. As your dog's foundation skills strengthen, we will introduce your dog to the first of the target odors, Birch.

We will take extra time on these foundation skills because the stronger your dog’s foundation skills become, the more confidence and success your dog will have in this sport- whether you intend to compete or if you just want to play an exceptionally fun game with your dog. The more confident your dog is, the more fun and success you will have as a team.

During these sessions of classes will also be bringing the search game outdoors to work on exterior searches and introducing vehicle searches as the weather permits.

Please note that these are general guidelines for what we will be working on during class and can vary or change based on different factors such as the weather and on the learning pace of the class overall.

Sessions 5-8 (S5-8):
INTERMEDIATE NOSE WORK

After completing the first four sessions of foundation work, we will move on to intermediate nose work for another four sessions. These series of classes will include working on developing handler skills to strengthen teamwork. We will increase the level of difficulty of the searches to challenge and hone your dog’s skills and we will focus on exercises to help you, the handler, more precisely read your dog.

In addition, we will learn to play a variety of nose work and scent work games offered at trials from various organizations as well as teach the dogs to find additional target odors used in the most popular competitions.

Please note that these are general guidelines for what we will be working on during class and can vary or change based on different factors such as the weather and on the learning pace of the class overall.
