Some Frequently Asked Questions and Answers about nose work.

What is K9 Nose Work?

K9 Nose Work® is a sport for the pet dog based on authentic scent detection training. Dogs have an amazing sense of smell and a natural desire to hunt. Scent work can help develop confidence even in the most timid dog. The mental exercise of searching and problem-solving is great for calming and focusing the energetic or highly aroused dog. Another huge benefit of K9 Nose Work® is the positive working relationship that develops between you and your dog when you both are out “hunting” together as a team.

For those handlers that love to compete, K9 Nose Work® classes taught by Rosana will prepare you for the official Nose Work Trials sanctioned by the NACSW (National Association of Canine Scent Work) as well as the many organizations forming their own versions of this wonderful sport, such as PSD, AKC, USCSS and UKC.

What is a high-value treat?
  • If your dog's eyes get big, the ears prick forward and he’s at complete attention- that’s a high value treat.

  • STORE BOUGHT: Some of the more popular commercial brands are Zukes, Natural Balance, Fresh Pet & Bil Jak, although there are many good brands out there. Look for treats that are soft, chewy and have a strong aroma- these work best.

  • HOME MADE/NATURAL: If you want to stay with treats that are not commercially made or come right from your fridge you can use grilled chicken, cubed cheese, hot dogs- these have been extremely popular.
